Fracture Score™: How KYB Risk Scoring Works for AU/NZ Entities
A pass/fail ABN check tells you if an entity exists. A Fracture Score tells you how much risk it carries. Here is how AU/NZ entity risk scoring works.
Beyond pass/fail
Most ABN verification tools return a binary result — the ABN is either valid or it is not. This is a necessary check but not a sufficient one.
An active ABN tells you the entity is registered. It does not tell you whether the entity is a complex trust structure, whether it is registered for GST, or whether any structural risk signals are present. A compliance team needs to know not just whether to proceed, but how carefully.
The Fracture Score™ is Osapher's answer to this gap — a 0–100 risk metric calculated from live registry signals that gives compliance teams a precise, actionable risk assessment.
How the score is calculated
The Fracture Score is built from three registry signals, each contributing a fixed number of points:
Signal 1 — Inactive Registration: +60 points
The ABN or NZBN status is not Active. This is the highest-weight signal because a deregistered or cancelled entity represents an immediate and serious compliance risk.
Signal 2 — Complex Entity Structure: +20 points
The entity type is a Trust or Partnership. These structures carry inherent compliance complexity — trusts in particular have beneficial ownership layers that require additional scrutiny.
Signal 3 — No GST Registration: +10 points
A company or trust that is not registered for GST. This is a lower-weight signal but meaningful for entities that would typically be expected to be GST-registered based on their structure and scale.
Signals are additive. The maximum possible score is 90 (60 + 20 + 10). A clean entity — active, simple structure, GST registered — scores 0.
The four risk bands
- 0–20: LOW RISK — No significant signals detected. Proceed with standard onboarding process.
- 21–50: MEDIUM RISK — One or more signals present. Review recommended before onboarding. Enhanced documentation may be appropriate.
- 51–80: HIGH RISK — Multiple signals or a significant single signal. Enhanced due diligence required. Do not onboard without officer review.
- 81–100: CRITICAL — Inactive registration confirmed. Do not onboard without legal review. This score indicates the entity is deregistered or cancelled.
How compliance teams use the score
The Fracture Score is designed to support — not replace — officer judgment. A common workflow:
- Verification runs and returns a Fracture Score
- Score 0–20: Auto-approve or fast-track review
- Score 21–50: Route to officer for manual review with the full signal breakdown
- Score 51+: Escalate to senior compliance or legal team
- Officer records a decision (Approve / Flag / Reject) — logged in the immutable audit trail
Every Fracture Score decision is recorded in the Osapher audit log with a timestamp, officer identity, and SHA-256 cryptographic hash — creating a defensible compliance record for every entity reviewed.
Portfolio risk — beyond individual checks
The Fracture Score is also the foundation of Osapher's Risk Engine — a portfolio-level view of risk across all your verified entities. The Risk Engine shows average Fracture Score, risk distribution (Low / Medium / High / Critical), signal frequency, and a ranked leaderboard of your highest-risk entities.
This gives compliance teams visibility not just into individual verifications but into the overall risk profile of their portfolio.
See the Risk Engine page for full details, or read the Fracture Score™ documentation for the technical implementation.
Limitations
The Fracture Score is calculated from registry data only. It does not incorporate credit history, adverse media, court records, or sanctions screening. It is designed to be the first layer of entity risk assessment — not the complete picture.
A score of 0 does not guarantee an entity is legitimate. Always combine registry verification with your own due diligence processes.
