NZBN Verification: How New Zealand Business Checks Work in 2026

The New Zealand Business Number is the authoritative identifier for NZ business entities. Here is what NZBN verification covers and how to implement it.

What is the NZBN?

The New Zealand Business Number (NZBN) is a unique 13-digit identifier assigned to every business entity registered in New Zealand. It is maintained by the New Zealand Companies Office and serves as a single source of truth for business identity in New Zealand.

The NZBN registry is publicly accessible at nzbn.govt.nz and contains registration status, entity type, legal name, and address information for every registered NZ business.

Osapher is not affiliated with the New Zealand Companies Office or the New Zealand Government. Registry data is sourced from publicly available government APIs for informational KYB purposes only.

NZBN vs ABN — what is the difference?

The NZBN and ABN serve equivalent functions in their respective jurisdictions — both are the primary business identifier used for KYB verification. Key differences:

  • Format: ABN is 11 digits. NZBN is 13 digits. Osapher auto-detects jurisdiction from identifier length.
  • Registry: ABN is maintained by the ATO via the Australian Business Register. NZBN is maintained by the New Zealand Companies Office.
  • GST equivalent:New Zealand's GST registration is separate from the NZBN registry.

What NZBN verification returns

A live NZBN query returns:

  • Legal entity name
  • Registration status (Registered or Deregistered)
  • Entity type (Company, Sole Trader, Partnership etc.)
  • Registration date
  • Registered address
  • NZBN as a structured identifier

Risk signals for NZ entities

Osapher applies the same Fracture Score™ framework to NZBN verifications as to ABN checks:

  • Inactive registration (+60): NZBN status is Deregistered or otherwise inactive
  • Complex structure (+20): Entity type is a Trust or Partnership
  • No GST (+10): Where GST data is available and the entity is unregistered

A deregistered NZBN scores at least 60/100 — placed immediately in the High Risk band.

Verifying AU and NZ entities in the same workflow

For platforms operating across Australia and New Zealand, maintaining separate verification workflows for ABN and NZBN adds unnecessary complexity.

Osapher handles both registries through a single API endpoint. Pass the identifier and jurisdiction — Osapher routes the query to the correct registry and returns a standardised response with Fracture Score™.

Trans-Tasman compliance workflows

Australian businesses expanding into New Zealand — and vice versa — frequently need to verify counterparties in both jurisdictions. A single verification platform that covers both the ABR and NZBN removes the need to maintain separate tools and processes for each jurisdiction.

Osapher's bulk verification pipeline supports mixed AU/NZ batches — you can upload a CSV with a combination of ABNs and NZBNs and receive a standardised result set for the entire portfolio. Each entity receives a Fracture Score™ calculated from the appropriate registry source.
